Christianity tops global online engagement among world faiths

Published by Duncan Williams On 13/01/2026

New research suggests that interest in faith is increasingly playing out online, with Christianity emerging as the most active religious community on major social media platforms.

The study, carried out by Christian jewellery company MyCross, examined how different world religions are searched, shared, and discussed across the internet.

The analysis compared global demographics, Google search activity, YouTube visibility, and Instagram engagement. It also tracked queries related to sacred writings and teachings, offering a picture of what people are looking for when they go online with questions about religion.

According to the findings, Islam is the most searched-for religion, with more than 31 million people each month looking up information on Google. Yet it is Christians who are most visibly active on social media, with over 11 million Instagram posts focused on Christian faith alone.

When individuals seek answers about Christianity specifically, the study notes that 21 million people per month turn to the internet for information about the religion.

The Bible continues to drive significant digital engagement as well, remaining the most-researched religious text in the world, with 47 million people searching for verses, themes, and teachings online.

Beyond the two largest religions, the report highlights growing interest in Eastern traditions. Buddhism, in particular, registers strong levels of online exploration, with 8 million monthly Google users researching its philosophies and practices.

MyCross argues that these numbers reflect a shift in how religious ideas travel and how younger generations encounter them.

“Faith has always been about connection, and today that connection is increasingly digital,” a spokesperson for the company said. “From social media and video platforms to informational websites, religious communities are finding new ways to make their traditions accessible and visible to younger generations.”

To compile the rankings, the study used five visibility indicators: global religious demographics, Google search volumes related to religion, Instagram hashtag use, search interest in sacred writings, and a proprietary YouTube Visibility Index based on channel and video counts.

These metrics were combined into a final visibility score designed to highlight faiths with significant influence online.

The digital presence is unfolding against the backdrop of a rapidly connected world. As of 2025, more than 5.6 billion people, nearly 70% of the world’s population, are active on social media.

This research suggests that far from diminishing the role of religion, online platforms are offering new avenues for exploration and expression, whether through curiosity-driven searches, scripture lookups, or believers sharing their faith publicly.
